The Malta FA dismissed a protest lodged by Ħamrun Spartans against the result of the league match against Floriana, won by the latter 2-1.

Ħamrun PRO Emanuel Fenech yesterday told The Times that the Malta FA had informed the club at the end of last week that their protest was not upheld.

“The reason given was that the governing body deemed that no rules had been broken during the match,” Fenech said.

Ħamrun deemed that a technical error was committed in the build-up to Floriana’s second goal. They contended that striker Michael Mecerod, who was out receiving treatment, had returned to the field without the permission of referee Kevin Azzopardi.

Mecerod immediately took possession and released team-mate Ivan Woods who was upended in the area by Steve Bonnici. The Ħamrun defender was dismissed and Floriana were awarded a penalty. Woods scored from the spot.
