Ħamrun Spartans yesterday lodged a protest against the result of Sunday’s Premier League match against Floriana at the National Stadium.

Ħamrun are contending that the final result should be declared null and the match replayed as a technical error was committed during the build-up to Floriana’s second goal in the Greens’ 2-1 win.

The Spartans are arguing that on 56 minutes Floriana striker Michael Mecerod, who had been out of the pitch to receive treatment, returned on the field of play without the permission of referee Kevin Azzopardi.

Mecerod immediately took possession and released team-mate Ivan Woods who was tripped in the box by Steve Bonnici. The Ħamrun defender was dismissed and Floriana were awarded a penalty.

Woods scored the winner from the spot.
