Former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff has been discharged from Mater Dei Hospital.

The former Labour leader, 94 was taken back home in Tarxien in a private car.

He was admitted to hospital on September 16 after having suffered a minor stroke. His condition was initially described as serious and he was treated in the intensive therapy unit, where he quickly responded to treatment.

He was visited by, among others, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat, who called three times, and Archbishop Paul Cremona.

Informed sources said Mr Mintoff had recovered well and had insisted with hospital staff today that he wanted to return home.
