Dom Mintoff, former Prime Minister and Labour leader, has been discharged from hospital after spending nearly two weeks in Mater Dei having suffered a light stroke.

Although initial reports described his condition as serious, Mr Mintoff made a steady recovery since his admission on September 16 where he was initially treated in the Intensive Care Unit.

The 94-year-old was admitted in an acute confused state and a CT scan confirmed he had suffered a stroke. He was also treated for suspected pneumonia.

Mr Mintoff was yesterday taken back to his home in Tarxien in a private car. Sources said he had recovered well, was fit for discharge and had insisted with hospital staff that he wanted to return home.

Meanwhile, television and radio presenter Joe Grima, a former Labour minister, was taken to hospital yesterday after sustaining a fall on a wet floor in his house.

His family reassured The Times his condition was not serious.

Traffic piled up near his apartment along the Sliema Ferries, when a fire engine brought the stretcher down six stories to an ambulance below, in a scene reminiscent of the recent incident when the late President Emeritus Guido De Marco was last taken to hospital.
