Marija Sciberras won the 100 metres hurdles ‘C’ final at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore yesterday.

Running in lane 4 at the Bishan Stadium, the young Maltese sprinter dashed home first in 14.69 seconds – trimming 0.13 seconds off her previous season best she had set during last Tuesday’s heats in Singapore and a mere 0.02 seconds off her personal best of 14.67.

Sciberras finished ahead of Mozambique’s Silvia Panguana who was second in 14.77 seconds and Salma Abdelhamid, of Tunisia, who clocked 14.88 seconds.

Tamara Vella came agonisingly close to winning the 100 metres ‘D’ final as the Maltese runner was just pipped to victory by Mali’s Hawa Diarra.

Both Vella and Diarra clocked 13.16 seconds but the Mali sprinter was handed victory after the judges analysed the photo-finish. Vella’s timing was just outside her personal best of 13.11 seconds she had set in the qualifying heats earlier last week.

In the judo competition, Malta’s Jeremy Saywell failed to progress from the preliminary round of the boys’ 66 category.

The young judoka was first up against Lithuania’s Kestutis Vitkauskas and was beaten by an Ippon. Saywell then took on Denmark’s Phuck Cai and lost his bout by an ippon.

Yesterday’s results in Singapore brought to an end Malta’s participation in this inaugural edition of the Youth Olympic Games. The other Maltese athlete in Singapore was swimmer Mark Sammut who earlier this week competed in the 100 metres backstroke and the 200m backstroke.
