Spartans sign Scottish striker Shields

Ħamrun Spartans will be looking to stage a better fare than they did last season in the Premier League with the signing of Scottish striker Dene Shields who agreed to play for the Maltese team after signing a one-year contract yesterday.

The Spartans struggled to leave their mark in the top flight last year and played the second half of the season in the Relegation Pool after failing to make the cut among the top six.

They have already strengthened coach Steve D’Amato’s squad with the acquisition on loan of Valletta duo Massimo Grima and David Camilleri and goalkeeper Omar Borg from Birkirkara.

Shields joins the other two foreigners so far confirmed by Ħamrun, Marcelo Perreira and Martin Hrubsa. Two other Brazilian players are currently on trial at the Tedesco Stadium along with a Serbian defender.

Shields last played his football in the Scottish Division One with Raith Rovers. The much-travelled 27-year-old also had spells with Sunderland, Gretna and Ross County. He is likely to make his first official showing for the Reds on Thursday in a friendly against Premier League rivals Marsaxlokk (kick-off 6 p.m.).
