The police have launched a murder investigation after the corpse of a migrant from the Ivory Coast was found partially buried in a field in Hal Far.

The discovery was made at about 5.30 p.m. opposite a hangar which is used as an open centre for migrants. Blood marks that were relatively fresh were found near by.

The police said the victim was a 30-year-old man resident at the open centre. Other migrants are being questioned about the circumstances leading to his death and burial.

A forensics team was on site for a preliminary assessment of the cause of death. The police set up a generator and arch lights to enable investigations to continue into the night. A large number of migrants observed proceedings from a distance.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti held an inquiry.
