Libyan Zeiad Mohammed Abuzoda was this morning jailed for 18 months suspended for two years after pleading guilty to seriously injuring his girlfriend Krasimira Dimitrova yesterday.
Mr Abuzoda, who was hysterical and nervous and cried during the court hearing said he had lots of problems because he loved his girlfriend but she loved somebody else.
Police inspector Edmond Cuschieri told the court that the accused cut Ms Dimitrova’s finger with a corned beef container, which he presented in court, because he believed that if she bled it meant that she was cheating on him. He also scratched her face.
Mr Abuzoda, who owns a clothes shop in Libya, also pleaded guilty to threatening Ms Dimitrova with a knife and assaulting three police officers.
Magistrate Antonio Mizzi put the girl under a protection order for three years.
