One of the priorities of the Ministry of Gozo for this year is to carry out studies on how best to rebuild the breakwater at Marsalforn Bay, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said in Parliament.

The ministry also intends to draw up a holistic plan for Marsalforn and Xlendi, she told Labour MP Anton Refalo in reply to a parliamentary question.

Much of the breakwater on the left side of Marsalforn Bay (looking out) was swept away years ago. Since then rough seas have been damaging the promenade. Last January the waves pulled up a section of the promenade paving and toppled concrete pillars that hold the railings. Shop fronts across the road were also damaged.

Żebbuġ council, which is responsible for Marsalforn, had said it could not continue repairing storm damage unless action was taken to fix or rebuild the breakwater. It called on the Gozo Ministry to take urgent action to protect residents, fishermen, businessmen and the tourism industry.
