President George Abela was today visited at the Ruijin Hospital in Shangai by his Chinese counterpart President Hu Jintao.

Prior to the Chinese President’s visit, Dr Abela had already been visited by Madame Fu, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs.

President Abela thanked the President for finding the time in his busy schedule to visit him. He said the Maltese delegation was overwhelmed by the excellent treatment and hospitality they were shown, and made special reference to the doctors and staff at the hospital.

The visit was characterised by the Chinese President’s concern about President’s Abela’s health, and by the friendly and informal conversation which ensued.

President Hu wished President Abela a speedy recovery, and also asked to be briefed about his condition by the medical team looking after the Maltese President

The visit ended with President Abela extending an invitation to the Chinese President to visit Malta, and with an exchange of gifts.

President Abela suffered a fracture of the transverse process of the L2 vertebra when he fell. This injury is associated with severe bruising and pain, and requires bed rest, immobilisation and pain relief.
