The bus stops for Valletta-bound passengers at The Strand/Ferries in Sliema were today shifted to the opposite side of the road, near Marks and Spencer, as waves crashed over the promenade and into the street, making it impossible for passengers to board.

A spokesman for the local council said this was a consistent problem whenever there was a strong North-Easterly wind.

Flaps installed some years ago - to stop the sea coming in from rainwater culverts - had been a partial solution to the problem before they were smashed by the waves.

Last year the rough sea also damaged paving slabs on the promenade.
