Gozo contributes €335 million to GDP

Gozo contributed €335 million to the national Gross Domestic Product, according to provisional estimates for 2008 released by the National Statistics Office.

The figure equated to 5.9 per cent of total GDP.

Gross Value Added (GVA) went up 5.1 per cent in Malta and 3.7 per cent in Gozo in 2008. Gozo also accounted for 9.3 per cent of the total increase in employment last year.

The contribution by the Gozitan fishing and agricultural sector to the island's GVA amounted to 4.9 per cent.

In industry, Malta registered a one per cent increase in GVA while Gozo registered a decline of 0.4 per cent.

Employment rose in Malta and Gozo in 2008, mainly due to increased activity in the services sector. The primary and industry sectors had declines in employment but Gozo's agricultural and fishing sector registered increases.
