Christian Farrugia has been appointed non-executive chairman of Bawag Malta Bank Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Austrian Bawag P.S.K. banking group.

Bawag Malta Bank, which launched its operations in Malta in September 2003, provides financial solutions to customers in Malta, in the Mediterranean region, the Middle East and North Africa.

The bank's main focus is on commercial banking, offering loan and deposit services in any currency, project finance for both the private and public sectors, and international syndications, transactions and structured finance.

Dr Farrugia is a lawyer by profession with over 20 years experience behind him. His areas of specialisation include corporate and maritime law, mergers and acquisitions, banking and financial services. He is a co-managing partner of Fenech Farrugia Fiott Legal and a director of Alliance Trust Co. Ltd, a company licensed by the Malta Financial Services Authority to act as a fiduciary and trustee. He also sits on the Board of Directors of several other companies.

Commenting on his recent appointment Dr Farrugia said: "Bawag Malta is already well established on the island and is committed to strengthening its presence as a leading banking institution by ensuring that the top-level standards which it has maintained in its corporate governance practices as well as in its operations over the last six years, are further enhanced in the coming years. As chairman of the bank, I look forward to contributing to its further growth and success."

The board of Bawag Malta Bank is also composed of Carsten Samusch, Friedrich Spandl and Otto Karasek, who is also chief executive officer.

Bawag Malta Bank operates from its offices at The Strand in Sliema.
