Madliena coastal watch tower has been handed to Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna for restoration and management as a cultural attraction.

The handing over was made this evening by the parliamentary secretary responsible for lands, Jason Azzopardi, to Mario Farrugia, director-general of FWA.

Madliena Tower is one of the De Redin towers, built in1658. It will benefit from funding from the EU for a heritage trail along Bahar ic-Caghaq and Madliena.

In a short speech Dr Azzopardi praised FWA for its activities. The foundation was recently also handed responsibility for fortifications under the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, including the War Room and the Saluting Battery.

Some months ago it was handed St Thomas Tower in Marsascala, on which restoration works have been taken in hand.

The foundation also manages Fort Rinella, Bieb is-Sultan near Zabbar and Xaghjra Tower.
