A 48-year-old man was yesterday charged with trafficking in almost a kilo of heroin after the police spent several weeks monitoring his movements.

Martin Dimech, of Żejtun, pleaded not guilty to possessing 900 grams of heroin with intent to sell it and relapsing.

Police Inspector Victor Aquilina said that, after being tipped off about two months ago that Mr Dimech may be dealing in drugs, the police placed him under surveillance.

On Friday, they searched his house and arrested him.

Mr Dimech admitted to the police that the drugs were his and told them that the woman who lived with him was not involved, the inspector said.

Magistrate Edwina Grima ordered that all Mr Dimech's be frozen and turned down his request for bail. Lawyers Franco Debono and Charmaine Cherrett represented Mr Dimech.
