The final GSSE selection shoot in air-rifle and air-pistol took place at the Bidnija airgun ranges a few days ago.

William Vella was the undisputed winner in the air-rifle category. Despite nursing an eye injury, Vella still managed a fine score of 571, exceeding the Olympic MQS by one point.

Lawrence Darmanin was second with 555, ahead of the young Charlo Chircop, 546. The air-pistol competition was won by Ray Cacciattolo. He attained the best score of the season, 551. Martin Grech was second with a score of 498.

The Open air-rifle event was keenly-contested throughout with the Smith duo unable to see off the challenge of promising newcomer Eleanor Bezzina.

After a tie in the qualification shoot with William Smith, both 508 points, Bezzina went on to shoot superbly in the final to secure the day's honours. A bright future beckons this talented young shooter who is thinking about switching to the Olympic 10m air-rifle discipline.

Gino Galea was the selection shoot referee. He was assisted by Bernadette Chircop.

Among the guests for the shoot was MOC Director of Sport Mark Cutajar who distributed the trophies and medals to the winners after the finals.
