This two-storey palace on Triq l-Arċisqof facing Misraħ San Ġorġ is characterised by extensive and highly elaborate ornamentation recalling Spanish Baroque architecture.

This is particularly visible in the general treatment of the door and window surrounds on the façade, the incorporation of the dove sculptural motifs in the street level windows, (hence known as Casa delle Colombe), the highly decorative corbels supporting the wooden balconies and the crowning cornice at parapet wall level.

The flamboyant decorative treatment is a significant variant from the normal Roman Baroque architecture and seems to have been inspired by the preference of excessive ornamentation that is a characteristic of Spanish Baroque.

The building is attributed to Francesco Buonamici. The hostel was the residence of Fra Jean-Jacques de Verdelin of the langue of Provence, who was the nephew of Grand Master Verdala, and was nominated Grand Commander of the Order in 1666 apart from several other high offices.

The house was inherited by his brother, the knight Jean-François and later it became the Order's property and after the Order's departure it became state property to this day.

Mepa scheduled the Casa delle Colombe and Hotel de Verdelin as Grade 1 national monuments as per Government Notice No. 276/08 in the Government Gazette dated 28 March 2008.
