The Swedish international was the star of the show as he won Best Foreign Player, Best Player and Best Goal of 2008. Juventus scooped three awards. Alessandro Del Piero was honoured as Best Italian Player, Chiellini landed the Best Defender award while Gigi Buffon was top goalkeeper.

'Fascist' gestures: A group of Real Madrid fans have been reported by a referee for making what he termed fascist gestures and chanting fascist slogans, according to the official report from Sunday's match against Osasuna at the Bernabeu. Referee Alfonso Perez Burrull said in his report that some Real fans in an area behind one of the goals were waving flags and banners with "extremist or radical symbolism".

Aguero: Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero backed coach Javier Aguirre following calls from some fans for the Mexican to be sacked after a run of four defeats and a draw. "Getting rid of Aguirre would not be the solution," the Argentina said. "We are all to blame, not just the boss," he added. "He has been meeting the goals set for him by the club."

Basket, NBA: Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan has agreed to return for a 22nd season. The 66-year-old Sloan has been Utah's head coach since assuming the reins from former head coach Frank Layden on Dec. 9, 1988, making him the longest-serving active coach with one team in major professional sports. Sloan's 1,113-734 record makes him the first NBA coach to win 1,000 games with one team.

Super Bowl: Kurt Warner tossed three first-half touchdowns to Larry Fitzgerald as the Arizona Cardinals edged the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 in the NFC title game on Sunday to book their first trip to the Super Bowl. The Cardinals, who last appeared in the NFL title game 61 years ago when the team played in Chicago, will face Pittsburgh Steelers who beat Baltimore Ravens 23-14.

Cricket: Indian test cricketers, including batsmen Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, were escorted away unhurt yesterday after fans rioted at a charity Twenty20 game in the eastern city of Patna. Around 20 people were injured when policemen with batons chased fans who invaded the field to get close to their favourite players at the prize distribution.
