Michael Bolton talked more politics and sounded more like a social worker than a renowned pop singer on his arrival at Malta International Airport yesterday.

Downing a coffee as soon as he landed, he said he was up till 5.30 a.m. to watch the US vice-presidential debate on CNN. But despite his tiredness, he was still excited to be here.

The singer, who is performing at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre in Ta' Qali this evening, makes his political leanings clear before he talks about the show.

He just had to watch the debate and as to who impressed him most: "It's very easy. Barack Obama is going to be the US President!"

He is particularly into the vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden, who, he points out, is very strong on protecting women - something the pop star holds to heart. He co-authored the Violence Against Women Act and that says it all for Michael Bolton.

"Joe Biden has been my hero for years even though I love Hillary (Clinton) and have been very close to the Clintons for about 17 years. I would have wanted her to be the vice-presidential candidate but I think Obama made a wise choice in Biden.

"I think Obama is what we need and what the world needs," he says, expressing his confidence in his victory.

As to the social worker streak and the strong feelings on domestic violence - he even set up the Michael Bolton Charities - he says it is not his own personal experience as much as the way he was raised not to accept that kind of treatment.

"When you start doing that work and find out what's going on, it's appalling!" Before he gets carried away, Michael Bolton clarifies: "I'm not running for office; I'm running for the show tomorrow night!"

Offering some insight into it, without wanting to reveal too much, he says he has a great band he has been travelling with around the world. "We have some great horn players, who are women and are lots of fun...

"We can do the big band music but we can perform all the hits from When a Man Loves a Woman, to Time, Love and Tenderness and Steel Bars; even arias like Nessun Dorma.

"I'm giving away every song," he says, holding back. "It depends on the audience and how they feel... I'll be watching them... I'm really looking forward to it. I feel the energy. So many people got tickets so quickly, and yet, I've never been here."

While he's in Malta for just two days, Michael Bolton intends to see as much he can, "but I also... Well, I can't tell you, but I have a couple of plans". He has done his homework on Malta and he starts listing its vital statistics and the various conquerors - not bad for an American!

The singer, best known for soft rock ballads and tenor vocals, categorically claims that his appeal is cross-generational. That can be confirmed by the three female fans, waiting in the arrivals lounge. It's not so much the numbers, but the ages: 13, 27 and 51.

And it's the oldest one who is shaking the most. She waited four hours to fulfill her 20-year dream to touch Michael Bolton because the time of his arrival was kept under wraps.

Anna Calleja left her husband hungry and is glad he is not jealous. In fact, he encouraged her to go and greet her idol, saying: "Maybe he'll take you away with him!" Ms Calleja would only do dinner...
