Brendan Caruana Montaldo, MD FACP, recently attended a Fellowship Convocation ceremony to honour newly elected fellows in Washington DC, US.

He was elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 2007.

Dr Caruana Montaldo graduated from Medical School at the University of Malta in 1988, and completed residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

He completed his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at Penn State University, Pennsylvania and specialised in sleep medicine at the University of Chicago.

He re-certified in internal medicine in 2005, pulmonary medicine in 2006 and critical care medicine in 2007.

Dr Caruana Montaldo was local primary investigator in 2007 for a study by Theravance Therapeutics for a new antibiotic called Televancin. He also presented abstracts at the European Respiratory Society on tuberculosis, at the American Association of Professional Sleep Societies on insomnia, and at the American Thoracic Society on aspiration of gastric contents in intubated patients.

Furthermore, he has published articles on asthma, the control of ventilation, and psychological effects of obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr Caruana Montaldo is a consultant respiratory physician at Mater Dei Hospital.
