Malta's Ryan Gambin set a new national record in the Olympics Swimming-Men's 100m butterfly heats this afternoon, but that was not enough to achieve his dream of making it to the semi-finals.

Gambin came sixth in heat four, with a time of 53.70 seconds. The previous national record was 53.94s. The following were the results:
