Fibromyalgia is a severe condition that affects sufferers both physically and psychologically. Unfortunately, from experience, I can say that firbromyalgia is often misdiagnosed as arthritis, as both rheumatic conditions cause pain and stiffness to the sufferer's joints.
Some of the other symptoms of fibromyalgia include swelling, migraines, diarrhea, vomiting, oversensitivity to light and sound, depression and fatigue. Some books define fibromyalgia as 'the irritable everything syndrome'.
Fibromyalgia sufferers are mostly women between the ages of 20 and 50, however, men, children and elderly could also suffer from it.
Although this condition affects a considerable number of people worldwide, in Malta there is not much awareness about it. I have decided to start a support group where members can provide each other with emotional support and invite professionals who can give useful advice to make our lives easier.
The next meeting will be held at Caritas, Lion Street, Floriana, on Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. For more information send an e-mail to fibromyalgiamalta@yahoo.co.uk or send an sms on 9926-2205 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. only.
