Paola Hibs Candy and Aloysians Lipton are the winners of the 2006/2007 Super Cup. Hibs beat X-Sel in a convincing manner 3-0 in the women's contest as Aloysians made up for the Sportswriters Association Cup upset with a 3-0 win over Kerygma.

Hibs started off well and closed the first set 25-11.

X-Sel were without regulars Catherine Attard, Charlene Attard and Thais Gatt. Their absence was felt as the team led by Claudio Coppini and Marvic Micallef struggled to keep Hibs at bay.

Hibs were in top form and played their best volleyball this season. They reached X-Sel at 14-all in the second set before making it 2-0 with a 25-20 set win.

Hibs coach David Bonnici opted to give each member of his squad an opportunity to play a part in the Super Cup victory. The third set was all in their favour as Hibs closed the set 25-11.

That of last weekend was the third consecutive Super Cup win for Hibs Candy.

Aloysians were all out for revenge over a Kerygma side that only the week before had outsmarted them to take the Sportswriters Association Cup.

This time around, Aloysians won the match in three sets - 25-17, 25-19 and 25-22.

The National League also started last weekend with a match between Marsascala and Fleur de Lys. The latter were without central attacker Jonathan Chetcuti but still managed to overcome their opponents 3-1.

The first set went FDL's way with Anatoly Debono and Eric Sciberras distinguishing themselves for the team.

Marsascala, now in the hands of former national team coach Branco Vlahovic, fought back and won the second set 25-20 only to lose a very close third and fourth sets 25-23 and 25-10.

U-18 championship

In a match from the girls' U-18 league, Flyers beat FDL 2-0.

Flyers, coached by Edward Gatt and Steve Farrugia, were at the top of their game and closed the sets 25-21 and 25-17.

Charlene Barbara, the FDL coach, must be credited for the excellent work she is doing with the girls.

This surely augurs well for FDL's chance to play in the senior league next season.
