Qormi 2
Senglea Athletic 4

Without doubt, this was the best game of the Division One season so far. The first half was a thrilling affair while the second, though uneventful in the early stages, will be remembered for an excellent individual performance from Senglea's Nigerian forward Chima Dozie.

Qormi had started the game on a high. With the likes of Carmel Formosa, Joseph Farrugia and Johann Zammit showing fine form, Martin Gregory's side took a two-goal lead but Senglea's never-say-die attitude saw them making a great comeback to win 4-2.

Qormi, who had goalkeeper Matthew Farrugia and Australian Jane Talcevski making their first start this season, went ahead after only six minutes. Zammit headed the ball goalward from a Formosa cross and as Senglea's Daniel Cosaitis miscued his clearance, Glenn Buhagiar forced the ball home despite George Attard's desperate attempt to keep the ball out.

After 10 minutes, Qormi may have doubled their lead when a Farrugia free-kick took a deflection and finished just wide of goal.

In the 19th minute, a good move by Senglea ended with Timothy Thomas's half-volley sailing just over the crossbar. Two minutes later, Qormi's Farrugia had a shot missing the target by a whisker.

Qormi increased their lead in the 24th minute. A corner by Edward Azzopardi was met with a powerful header from Buhagiar.

Within five minutes of Qormi's second goal, Senglea had reduced the arrears when the overlapping Thomas crossed perfectly for Dozie who fired past Farrugia.

In the 38th minute, Azzopardi's first-time effort from 25 metres out ended inches wide as both teams remained in attacking mode.

Senglea equalised on the stroke of half-time when Qormi goalkeeper Farrugia misjudged Matthew Borg's cross from a free-kick and Dozie was on hand to nod the ball home.

The second half started at a slower pace than the first, even though Senglea looked the livelier side. Yet, on 62 minutes, a Talcevski drive from outside the area was saved by the Senglea custodian and, from the rebound, Formosa just failed to connect from close range.

The two teams cancelled each other out for most of the second half but five minutes from the end, Senglea moved ahead. From a throw-in, Thomas served Glenn Bonello whose shot was saved partially by Farrugia but from the rebound, Dozie fired into the roof of the net.

Two minutes later, with virtually the entire Qormi team caught flat out in attack, Thomas picked possession in the middle, accelerated towards goal and passed to the unmarked Dozie. The Nigerian finished the move in style as he rounded the goalkeeper to hit his and Senglea's fourth goal.
