Arnold Cassola, the Maltese Green MP in the Italian Parliament (second from right), joined fellow Green MPs in a sit-in on Thursday in Piazza Venezia, Rome which called for the intervention of a peace-keeping force in Lebanon under the auspices of the United Nations. Commenting on the situation in the Middle East in a statement, Dr Cassola said Ehud Olmert's proposal that the UN troops in the region should be a combat force must be met with an outright refusal.

On the contrary, one must support the proposal that Italian and EU troops must intervene in Lebanon only after a ceasefire has been agreed between the two parts.
