Iran's football federation has appointed Amir Qalenoei, the coach of league champions Esteghlal, as their new manager of the national side.

He will replace Croatian Branko Ivankovic, who oversaw Iran's first round exit at the World Cup in Germany, the federation said.

Iran had a disappointing World Cup, beaten 3-1 by Mexico and 2-0 by Portugal before drawing 1-1 with Angola. The head of the federation was sacked immediately afterwards, while Ivankovic said he would be looking for new challenges.
