The lonesome tune of a solitary bagpipe signalled the beginning of a wreath-laying ceremony yesterday as Tarxien and the police corps paid tribute to a slain policeman.

Seven years on from his death, PC Mark Farrugia was branded a "hero" and an exemplary figure during a short but poignant ceremony at a garden dedicated to him.

Mr Farrugia, 24, was murdered by a fellow policeman in Tarxien early in the morning on March 20, 1999, just as he was about to enter his home.

Still wearing his uniform, PC 525 Farrugia was shot in the back at close range as he was returning from a night shift at around 4.45 a.m.

The keys to his parents' house in Neolithic Temples Street were still in his hands as he lay on the ground.

The court found that a former police constable had murdered PC Farrugia because he had reported him for driving a car without any insurance cover. Following an emotional trial, the accused was sentenced to 22 years in jail.

After a speech by the victim's mother, Josephine, Police Commissioner John Rizzo spoke about the impact of the young policeman's death.

Mr Rizzo, who had himself led the investigation into case, said: "I get sad feelings and feel tense whenever I recall Mark's murder. Mark was the symbol of goodness and the only reason he was murdered was because of his honesty and integrity."

Despite his age, the slain policeman had served as a model for others - and this is why the police headquarters had even named an award in his honour.

Working with the police force was more than a duty, it was a mission, Mr Rizzo told those present.

Earlier, the police band marched from the Tarxien church to the garden, while Police Chaplain Raymond Bonnici said prayers.
