Carmel Busuttil was yesterday named coach of Division Three club Sta Lucija Net Stars.

The former Malta captain, who was assistant to national coach Horst Heese for more than a year before relinquishing his post last summer, fills the post vacated by Joe Micallef who stood down as coach of Sta Lucija a couple of weeks ago.

News of Busuttil's imminent appointment as Sta Lucija coach was initially given during the sports news bulletin of national television channel TVM yesterday.

Sources told The Times that negotiations between Busuttil's current employers, namely the company that runs the Buzu Soccer School, Sta Lucija officials, led by president Victor Scerri, and a delegation from Media.Link, resulted in an agreement that will see the former Genk player taking over the Division Three club until the end of the season.

The deal contains an option whereby the contract may be extended for another year if agreed by all parties.

Since parting company with the MFA, Busuttil, 41, has concentrated on training youngsters enrolled with his soccer school.

Sta Lucija currently occupy a mid-table position in the 17-team Division Three league with seven points from four matches.
