Gozo's Heritage Society Wirt Ghawdex has called on the authorities to save yet another heritage landmark that is in danger of suffering considerable damage once it collapses.

For a number of years, the NGO has been calling for the reinforcement of the land close to St Martha chapel in Victoria that has subsided under a 19th century sign post that is now leaning dangerously.

The rectangular stone structure incorporates a sculpture of two souls burning in purgatory signifying the presence of a cemetery in the vicinity.

The Ministry for Gozo had filed an application with Mepa in 2003 and government employees had numbered the stonework, prior to dismantling the landmark but nothing else seems to have happened, it said.

Wirt Ghawdex appealed to all the stakeholders concerned especially the Ministry for Gozo, Mepa and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage to take immediate steps to restore this site.
