Pembroke Athleta laid claim to yet another success in the MAAA Clubs' League for men, taking the early lead in the standings after the first day of competition at Marsa.

Pembroke claimed three individual events last Friday - Rachid Chouhal in the long jump and the 400m and Cliff Busuttil in the triple jump. Pembroke also won the 4x100m relay. They notched up 110 points after a string of good placings in most of the other events.

Their closest challengers were Allcomers Aloysians for whom young Jean Claude Micallef, in the high jump, and Mario Mifsud, in the discus and shot, gained valuable wins.

There were other sound performances from Karl Farrugia who won a significant number of points for the team by gaining runner-up positions in the 100m and 200m races.

Some of the most interesting performances came in the sprints.

Mario Bonello (La Salle Tristar) gave proof of his current good form with a clear victory in the 200m (21.71) while Darren Gilford, running for Pembroke B, ran a relaxed 100m to win in 10.91.

Another fine showing came from promising La Salle javelin-thrower Edwin Zammit. He won his event with a throw of 46.83m.

The middle distances were won by athletes from different clubs. Gerald Grech (Libertas) won the 800m, Mellieha AC runner Alex Busuttil edged Ricky Baldacchino to win the 1,500m, and John Buhagiar, of Birkirkara SJ, was the 5,000m race winner.

Pembroke Athleta were also dominant in the Women's League.

Promising Lara Scerri proved her all-round ability with a good victory in the long jump. The Pembroke A team also gained other successes thanks to Antonella Cachia, discus, and in the 4x100m relay.

Tanya Blake, sporting the Zurrieq Wolves colours for the first time, had a comfortable victory in the 800m while Deirdre Farrugia made a welcome return to winning ways with a hard-fought success in the 100m.
