Graduates were duty-bound to help the country overcome the old laissez-faire mentality, Prof. Anthony Frendo, deputy dean of the Faculty of Arts, said yesterday.
Prof. Frendo said that whether or not Malta joined the European Union, everyone had to face the fact that it was not acceptable in the EU to act in a careless manner.
He raised the example of young children learning about punctuation. "First it will be punctuation, then writing, until we finally acquire a measure of half measures in the way we build our houses, our roads and how we work in and for our country," he said.
"As graduates, you must demonstrate at every turn that to be laissez-faire is not acceptable and that you have reached such a conclusion because you have been moulded around the diligent search for truth as an end in itself," Prof. Frendo said.
Prof. Frendo congratulated the students who graduated in yesterday's first ceremony of conferment of degrees at the University of Malta.
Damaris Fenech, a student who graduated Bachelor of Science (Hons) in communication therapy, said that university had been a great learning experience.
However, despite an overall good experience, the student felt the need to highlight certain shortcomings at the Institute of Health Care. Among these was the limitation of resources: from lack of new books in the library to a shortage of academic staff.
It was also pointed out that it was strange how a small number of people occupied a large number of posts within the institute, creating inconvenience for the students who always had to face the same person.
On the other hand, the student praised the university's involvement in several international programmes and the enriching experience garnered from visiting lecturers.
Speaking at yesterday's second ceremony, law graduate Justin Zahra described his six years at university as an enriching and fun experience. Dr Zahra also expressed the hope that, taking into consideration the large number of students who chose to study, the university would prepare some kind of plan for the future of such students.
Dr Zahra hoped there would be more communication between a faculty and the working world to ensure that the university met the demands of the market.
