Steve Mifsud, an Australian snooker player of Maltese origins, just failed to book a place in next season's professional Main Tour after missing out in an Oceania play-off last week.

The place in the lucrative top WPSA competitions went to Mifsud's compatriot from 'down under' John Younger. He won a tense-filled final 8-7 after cancelling a 1-4 deficit in the opening session.

Mifsud started strongly with breaks of 51 and 116 but Younger hit back to level at 6-6. A run of 75 put Mifsud ahead yet again, but the 14th frame went 70-24 in favour of Younger to set up a deciding frame shoot-out.

Both players had their chances only to break down under pressure but it was Younger who held his nerves to take the frame 80-37 and with it a place on the Main Tour next term.

For Mifsud, there was only the consolation of a Challenge Tour berth.
