Members of a Zurrieq family, all heirs of Catherine Camilleri, have filed a judicial protest claiming the Labour government of the early 1980s abusively took land from them without following the normal expropriation procedures.

The family said that then Works Minister Karmenu Vella had ordered the building of a road through their land in Zurrieq.

They had been given the impression that the land had been expropriated, and that they would be compensated.

But it had now resulted that the President's proclamation for the expropriation of their land was never issued. Nonetheless, Mepa had issued permits for building on the new road despite knowing that the land was privately owned.

Furthermore Transport Malta had not assumed responsibility for the road.

The protest was filed against Transport Minister Joe Mizzi, Mepa and against Mr Vella, giving them two days to come up with compensation. The family warned that it would otherwise institute legal action, including against Mr Vella personally.
