Deo Cassar (Who Won Zimbabwe's Elections? April 11) is totally wrong when he stated that the Zanu PF had asked for a recount of votes in the Zimbabwe presidential election.

There are no official results as yet! These have been witheld by the governing party and not published after more than two weeks. The Zanu PF party had asked for a recount of 21 parliamentary constituencies. The parliamentary results show that the party in government lost the majority of seats in Parliament for the first time since 1980.

Another wrong conception of Mr Cassar is that Simba Makoni's party is a breakaway faction of Zanu PF. The party is a breakaway faction of MDC and Mr Makoni is an ex-financial minister at odds with Mr Mugabe.

If one will observe the sequence of events in the latest Zimbabwe elections, it is easy to come to a conclusion that Mr Mugabe is engineering an additional presidential term for himself:

1. The ZEC (Zimbabwe Electoral Commision) started counting the parliamentary elections. Why not start with the presidential election count first? The presidential election count is more important.

2. The results were issued very, very slowly. In comparison, previous election results were published within 24 hours. Why take so long to publish the results?

3. The results of the Senate vote were issued in two batches. The first 10 and then after two days all the results were published suddenly.

4. While the results are still not yet published the premises of the ZEC are closed.

5. Farms of white farmers are being attacked by Zanu PF supporters just a few days after the election.

6. UK journalists were not even allowed to report from the city. Two men, one a US journalist, were even arrested.

In the run-up to the election, in March last year on the day following his 55th birthday, opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was heavily tortured by the police and left unconscious. A Zimbabwean freelance cameraman, Edward Chikombo smuggled television pictures of the badly injured Mr Tsvangirai out of the country following the beating.

Mr Chikombo was later abducted from his home in the Glenview Township outside Harare. His body was discovered on the weekend near the village of Darwendale, 80 kilometres west of the capital, Harare.

In 2002 and 2005 Zanu PF party rigged both elections with a huge amount of votes coming from the rural areas.

I will never compare the situation in Zimbabwe to Malta. It is because Africa is made up of politicians like Mr Mugabe that we have a problem with illegal immigration. We are lucky to be born in such a country!
