Zebbug Rangers caused the biggest shock in this season’s U*Bet FA Trophy when they knocked out Sliema Wanderers in a penalty shoot-out after the match had ended in a 1-1 draw.

It was deserved victory for the Division Two leaders who defended diligently throughout with the Wanderers struggling to leave their mark in the match.

Zebbug took the lead on 72 minutes when Mauricio Rodridues Britto controlled the ball on the edge of the area before letting fly a dipping shot that flew into the top corner of the net.

But their joy only last six minutes later when Zebbug goalkeeper Justin Spiteri fumbled his attempt to block Luigi Ruggiero’s shot and in came Alex Muscat to slot the ball into an empty net.

The Blues stepped up their efforts to grab a winner but the match headed to extra-time where no goals were scored.

In the penalty shoot-out, both teams scored their opening five penalties before Justin Spiteri turned from villain to hero for Zebbug when he scored his spot-kick before he saved Andrew Decesare penalty to send his team into the next round.
