Simon Zammit has entered the 5km open water event at the European Masters Swimming championships, currently being held in Seville, Spain.

Masters swimming is very popular throughout the world, attracting many competitors ranging in age from 25 to 100. Participants are split into four-year age bands starting from 25-29 years and progressing up to the oldest swimmers who have, in the past, competed in the 100-104 years age-group.

Zammit, an avid swimmer who has also been taking part in triathlon over the past few years, will be in the 45-49 age-group in Sunday's 5km open water race.

Zammit has been a big supporter of local swimming for a number of years. His son David is a member of the national swimming squad and Simon himself represents Sliema ASC on the ASA swimming board.

Training under the guidance of national coach Andy Colbourn, Zammit has made significant improvement this year, claiming a top-two placing in the Birkirkara St Joseph open water swimming series which was part of his build-up for the European Masters.

Zammit has also availed himself of the expert services offered by Triton Sport Ltd to optimise his training.
