The third round of the Campionato Siciliano di Velocita in Pista, at Racalmuto earlier this month, saw Grimaldi Team driver Matthew Zammit steal most of the limelight thanks to his exploits in the 1000cc class.

It was another positive weekend for the Grimaldi Team that entered seven cars in five different classes and rounded up the day winning four of those five categories.

Zammit and Johann Spiteri both raced in the 1000cc Formula class and Alex Zammit and Jason Muscat competed in the Sports Prototype race up to 1300cc with their Kawasaki-powered Radicals.

John Zammit returned to Racalmuto with his Lotus Elise, Alan Curmi was present again at the wheel of his Suzuki-powered Radical while the remaining three Grimaldi Team drivers, namely, Jamie Sammut, Zach Zammit and Joshua Anastasi all entered in 2-litre Formula cars.

The first practice session provided early indications of pace with most Grimaldi drivers well on race speed, but Zach and John Zammit encountered terminal mechanical problems and were reduced to spectators for the rest of the weekend.

Spiteri and Matthew Zammit were both in a class of their own in official qualifying for race 5, claiming first and second places on the grid respectively.

Fastest Grimaldi Team driver at the end of qualifying was Anastasi. He was finally getting some reliable laps with his JBR-4 Kawasaki. Thus the grid for race six saw Anastasi in third place on the grid, followed by Curmi and Sammut.

Muscat and Alex were also fastest in their class.

The Racalmuto circuit drew a capacity crowd on race day.

As the grid formed for race five, Spiteri had to withdraw with engine problems. Matthew Zammit made an excellent start and led the six-lap race from start to finish.

Race six saw Mario Pappalardo in front with Anastasi putting in a good performance to finish second, less than a second adrift, with Curmi and Sammut third and fourth respectively.

The afternoon races were all of a 10-lap duration.

Matthew Zammit made it three wins in a row in Sicily. Anastasi and Curmi were docked a grid position for a “jump start” in race one, so the grid saw Sammut’s Reynard Cosworth begin the race from the front row alongside Pappalardo.

At the lights Curmi jumped the start again, incurring a 10-second penalty. The race was again won by Pappalardo with Anastasi taking second place following Curmi’s penalty. Curmi was placed third and Sammut fourth.

Muscat drove a good race to claim another class win while Alex Zammit pulled out with suspension problems late in the last race.
