The Malta Judo Federation recently hosted the fifth European Judo Kata Championships, under the auspices of the European Judo Union, at the University Sports Complex.

The Maltese federation was handed the job of organising the event following last year's perfect hosting of the U-17 Championships. This time, there were 250 judokas and delegates present from 19 countries.

Malta fielded two competitors for the Kata Championships - John Zammit and his son Jerome.

John, a former GSSE gold medallist, is also a qualified Kata judge. The Zammit duo had a creditable showing and finished 16th and 24th in their respective categories.

Italian and Spanish judokas stole the limelight in the championships with most of the honours going to these two countries. The innovative Judo Show Cup was also held at the University Sports Complex. France won the event ahead of Italy and France.
