Zabbar's Labour Mayor Quinton Scerri resigned today after months of internal disputes which brought the council to a standstill.

Mr Scerri submitted his resignation to Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontempo and said he wanted to clear his name after criticism by the Local Councils Governance Board.

The board had reported financial shortcomings, secret recordings of conversations and person pique within the council. The board also alleged that a frame-up had taken place.

In a statement, the Labour Party said it had noted the resignation and called for quick action so that the council could resume its activities.
