The Malta Weightlifting Association (MWA) launched its activities for the year with a national competition at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

The event turned out to be a success and no fewer than six records were established.

Kimberley Coleiro, 16, set new marks in the +69kg youths and +75kg juniors, both in snatch. She lifted a total of 93kgs.

Another remarkable result was achieved by Rodmar Pulis, also 16.

He broke four national records in the 77kgs youths, twice in snatch and total record. He also set another record in the snatch for juniors.

Kirsten Coleiro also produced an encouraging display. This young lifter boasts excellent technique and improved his score to 81 points.

Clint Grech finished with a significant total of 198kgs and Noel Coleiro lifted 236kgs in total.

The competition also saw the first participation ever in MWA events of two members from the Nobel Club, run by Matthew Muscat Inglott.

Cleaven Cutajar had a total lift of 120kgs and Kristian Mintoff 193kgs.

The competition was run by Jesmond Caruana with the help of four technical officials; Stephen Borg, Simon Brincat, Ramona Borg and Gayle Caruana.

At the end of the tournament, MWA official Jesmond Vassallo handed out certificates to Rodienne Balzan and Gayle Caruana after successfully concluding their practice sessions in refereeing.
