Last Sunday, the Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU) hosted several rugby tournaments. Pembroke Dock Quins RFC, from Wales, and Sawyers Hall School, from England, provided opposition for local youth teams. Pembroke and Sawyers visited Malta to play rugby for a third consecutive year.

In the morning, Falcons, Alligators and Pembroke Dock Quins took part in an U-13 triangular tournament. Falcons beat Alligators 25-15 in the first of three matches.

Pembroke then won a close encounter with Alligators 20-15. In the third match, Falcons lost to Pembroke 30-15.

In true rugby tradition, several awards were given out to the captains and the best players.

Later in the day, Sawyers Hall faced the Alligators and Sharks in an U-15, 10-a-side competition.

Alligators took on Sawyers Hall in the first game, with the final score being a 15-15 draw. The last match was between Sharks and Sawyers.

In the first half, Sawyers Hall took the game to Sharks as they led 15-5 at half-time. Sharks hit back in the second half, coming close to drawing the match towards the end. However, two converted tries by Sawyers gave them a 24-20 victory.

In the final match, Stompers U-17's squared up to Sawyers Hall U-17's in a sevens game. Both teams put in a great effort from start to finish. Sawyers came back into the match in the second half, having gone into the break 17-5 down.

Constant pressure on the Stompers try-line saw the visiting side score a vital try which needed to be converted for them to draw the game. However, the attempt at goal was just missed and Stompers narrowly won the match 22-20.

The MRFU youth programme is supported by GasanMamo Insurance.
