Youth organisations from both sides of the political spectrum and others which are not involved in politics, have come together to thank Douglas W. Kmiec for his service as US Ambassador to Malta.

Prof Kmiec is stepping down after having been criticised in a State Department audit report because of his writings on religious matters.

The youth organisations in their letter said:

"We are sending this letter on behalf of the members of the undersigned youth organisations
in order to express our gratitude and appreciation for the proactive approach you have undertaken
throughout your diplomatic mission in Malta.

"It is through the support and contributions of dedicated public officials like your good-self that such
organisations may continue to deepen their understanding and knowledge about international relations
and contemporary political and diplomatic affairs.

"We are also grateful for your kind request to visit our offices, which enabled us to discuss US foreign
policy issues and democratic values at liberty and within an international perspective. In this regard,
your letter of resignation to President Obama has been regrettably noted. We have collectively agreed
that your efforts and input have been priceless and your interest in our work has strengthened our
determination in pursuing our aim to be of service to our country.

"Your Excellency, as was rightly pointed out in your letter of resignation, the epitome of the Maltese
society is expressed in our society's fondness of family values and our unwavering faith. Through your
methods of open communication with national stakeholders, you have managed to participate in this
dialogue, and have represented your country in a way, which is distinctive in its understanding of the
national context.

"We agree that such values should not undermine or be regarded to be detrimental to a person's
competence in public office, no matter at what level or position. Quoting from President Obama's
bestselling book 'The Audacity of Hope' society "will not be cured by money alone, and that our values
and spiritual life matter at least as much as our GDP". We believe that through your words and deeds
you have truly instilled this hope within the young people you have met.

"Whilst thanking you for your work, we wish you the very best for your future plans and look forward
to welcoming you in Malta shortly. Finally, despite the fact that you shall be relinquishing your
ambassadorial duties shortly, rest assured that you will be considered for much longer a true friend of
Malta, its people and perhaps to a greater extent, a much esteemed contributor to the development of
young people.
