Alexander Polidano, nine.
Dear Junior News, in the town where I live, there is a dog that lives on an apartment balcony. The balcony is very small and the dog has nowhere to move. This is very cruel but it gets worse.

On very hot days the dog remains on the balcony and has to sleep on the burning floor. I think to myself, at least he has some water to drink.

Dogs have much more sensitive ears than humans, so imagine how much he would bark when Tarxien or Gudja are having their festa fireworks. His owners get annoyed with this. Finally, when they have had enough they get a belt and hit him with it. They think are teaching him not to bark but they are influencing him to bark more. They should praise him when he is good if they want him not to bark.

Many thanks to all the people who help make Junior News. Best wishes.

And many thanks for your letter Alexander. Only by writing to the papers and talking about the way animals are treated can we make people aware of what goes on, under their noses sometimes. Sadly many people fear to do anything so others, like this poor dog's owners, get away with what is real cruelty. The cooler weather may be coming but then there's rain and storms to think about. Apart from the weather a balcony is no place for a dog.
Tomorrow is Animal Awareness Day. Take this paper with you. Talk about this dog at your school and see if you can come up with a way to help it. And, remember, the SPCA will make inspections wherever there is a report about animal cruelty.
And you've won a Lm 5 voucher and VIP Toyland's discount card for sending this week's star letter.

Luigi Muscat Filletti, nine, of Swieqi
Dear Junior News, My name is Luigi and I would like to tell you about my summer holiday in Austria. My family, together with my auntie, uncle and cousins, left on August 23 and stayed for a week.

One very beautiful day we went to Lake Königssee in the middle of the Bavarian Alps. We got there on a small wooden boat.

It was a lovely place to visit. We threw pebbles into the lake.

There were even some small swings to play on too. My cousins and I walked through a small forest until we came upon a tree house. We went to have a look.

There we saw a small waterfall, at the side of a cliff. After some time there, we ate an Austrian hotdog by the riverbank, watching the beautiful surroundings of the mountains and the emerald-coloured lake.

When it was time to leave, we crossed the river by boat to go back to the coach.

It is always especially interesting to visit somewhere totally different, Luigi. You and your family are lucky to have had such an exciting holiday. Thank you for writing to tell us about it and we'll be printing your other letter, about more destinations, in a future issue.
