Two 17-year-old Nigerians who admitted to insulting and seriously injuring one another on Friday evening at Dar Liedna, a home for asylum seekers in Fgura, were yesterday conditionally discharged for three years.

The two teenagers, who cannot be named because they are minors, fought over a mobile phone and then challenged each other to a fight.

The two teenagers were sentenced yesterday after spending a night in preventative custody following their arraignment on Sunday.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti had on Sunday rebuked the prosecuting police officers, saying that the arraignment could easily have waited until Monday, when the accused could have been charged within normal court hours.

Magistrate Grixti yesterday took into consideration that the two had clean police records, forgave each other and dropped their complaints against one another.

Police Inspector Spiridione Zammit prosecuted.

Lawyers Charmaine Cherrett, Franco Debono and Philip Galea Farrugia appeared for the two.
