A young loggerhead turtle was rescued this morning at Għadira Bay, Nature Trust Malta said on Facebook

The turtle, which has been named Daisy, was found lying on the beach by two passers-by. A medical inspection confirmed that she had ingested a fishing line and embedded hook.

Daisy is the second turtle to be rescued by Nature Trust's Wildlife Rescue team this week.

On Friday, activists came to the rescue of Carmine, a loggerhead turtle which had injured its left rear flipper after getting entangled in rope and other marine litter.

The Sea Turtle Conservancy estimates that more than 100 million marine animals are killed every year due to plastic debris in the world's oceans and seas. Turtles are especially susceptible, as they have downward-facing spines in their throats which makes it impossible for them to regurgitate.

Daisy is now in the care of Nature Trust veterinarian Anthony Gruppetta.

If you spot a turtle which is injured, in difficulty or dead, call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505. The team is on call day and night.
