Schoolchildren who contributed to the International Ocean Institute (IOI) Kids’ Spot the Jellyfish campaign over the summerwere recently honoured in aprize-giving ceremony.

The winning schoolchildren were Michael Psaila, who submitted the highest number of online jellyfish reports, Lorna Smith, who submitted the first report on the blue button jellyfish in Maltese waters, and Nathan Portelli, the youngest contributor to the initiative.

The Prime Minister’s wife, Kate Gonzi, presented the prizes, while Aldo Drago elaborated on recent initiatives to enhance the educational content of the website and Alan Deidun briefed those present on the salient features of the Spot the Jellyfish initiative.

The initiative is coordinated by Prof. Drago with the technical and scientific implementation of Dr Deidun and staff of IOI-MOC (Malta Operational Centre), and enjoys the support of the Malta Tourism Authority and of Nature Trust, Friends of the Earth, Ekoskola and the Blue Flag Malta programme.

A leaflet was also distributed and can be downloaded from www.ioikids.net/jellyfish. With the support of MTA, large posters have been projected on boards along major bays on both islands.

The initiative received international recognition for its innovative approach.
