No one was injured when a yacht caught fire off St Julian's at about 11.30am, producing a thick plume of smoke seen as far away as Birkirkara.

A spokesman for the Armed Forces of Malta said that the one person who was on board was assisted by people from other boats in the area and was then taken in to Haywharf by the AFM.

He was not injured but was taken to Mater Dei Hospital to be treated for shock.

The Civil Protection Department are also assisting in the operation.

The yacht is being brought inland.
