The Gozo FA Division One championship kicked off last weekend with Xewkija Tigers starting their title defence with a 2-2 draw against Għajnsielem.

Victoria Hotspurs edged Kerċem Ajax 1-0 while SK Victoria Wanderers had the better of St Lawrence Spurs 2-0.

A large crowd gathered at the Gozo Stadium for the championship opener between Xewkija and Għajnsielem.

The Blacks looked set to win the three points after opening a two-goal lead.

They were awarded a penalty on 56 minutes when Joseph Vella was fouled in the area by Rodney Buttigieg. Vella drilled his spot-kick into the net.

Għajnsielem doubled their advantage four minutes later through Charles Hili.

Xewkija looked in trouble and their woes deepened when, on 63 minutes, Peter Paul Buttigieg was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

But the Tigers’ grit and determination came to the fore as, on 70 minutes, they pulled a goal back through Thiago Melo Dos Santos.

The champions pushed more men forward and their efforts were rewarded in stoppage time.

They were given a penalty for a handling infringement by Simon Sultana. Former Malta international Daniel Bogdanovic stepped up for the kick and coolly converted from the spot to earn his side a dramatic point.

Victoria Hotspurs could not have hoped for a better start to their league campaign after beating Kerċem Ajax 1-0.

The Ajax came into the match in high spirits after some impressive displays in pre-season. However, it was the Hotspurs who returned home with the points when Miguel Montano scored the winner eight minutes into the second half.

In the other match from the GFA Division One, SK Victoria Wanderers recorded a deserved 2-0 win over St Lawrence Spurs.

The Wanderers outplayed their opponents for long stretches.

During the first half, they had two attempts by Predrag Djordjevic and another by Chris Sciortino that came off the woodwork.

Victoria took the lead on 63 minutes through Eric Nwankwo.

The Spurs hit back and created a number of scoring opportunities through Ghanain striker Sunday Baala.

However, it was Victoria who sealed the points late on when substitute Lauran Dimech was brought down in the area by goalkeeper Elliot Fenech and David Udo Monday made no mistake from the spot.

Late equaliser

Munxar Falcons and Nadur Youngsters shared the spoils after their opening Division Two game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Daniel Pace scored a brace for the Falcons (4, 52) while Nadur, who had Gabriel Muscat dismissed seven minutes from the end, responded with goals from Ryan Meilak (43) and a Saviour Attard penalty in stoppage time.

In the other matches, Sannat Lions eased to a 4-0 win over Żebbuġ Rovers with goals from Eric Gauci (18), Josiah Buttigieg (30), Mark Muscat (80) and Antoine Camilleri (90).

Xagħra United obtained a 1-0 win over Għarb Rangers. Marlon Mamo scored the winner on 76 minutes.
