Last week, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) said they had launched a formal investigation into the match from the UK Championship, which was played in Telford, between Jamie Burnett and Stephen Maguire.

Maguire emerged victorious from that first-round clash 9-3.

World Snooker said they were informed that several bookmakers had stopped taking bets on that exact scoreline well before the match got started.

Burnett, 33, had a good chance to remove any concerns about the result in the 12th frame, which would have made it 8-4.

However, he missed the black to concede the frame.

World Snooker has now instructed specialist lawyers to help in the case.

"The WPBSA is committed to taking all steps within its power to protect the integrity of the sport," a statement said.

"At approximately 1650 GMT on Friday, December 12 we received a telephone call from a bookmaker, reporting an unusual pattern of bets on Stephen Maguire to beat Jamie Burnett by a frame score of 9-3 in a match due to take place on the Sunday.

"The WPBSA immediately notified its other bookmaker contacts, so that the bookmakers could alert the industry.

"It also arranged for World Snooker officials to attend and observe the match in question and secured tapes of the match afterwards for further study.

"As part of the investigation, information will be gathered from all pertinent parties, including the players themselves, the match officials, the bookmakers and others in order to determine whether or not there is a case to answer for breach of the WPBSA's rules.

"If it is determined that there is a case to answer, the WPBSA will pursue it vigorously."

Burnett is denying any wrongdoing. He told reporters after the match that he knew the situation and the pressure had affected his play.

"In the last frame I have never felt more pressure in my life," he said.

"On the black I said to myself, 'I need to get this' in case some people start talking. I just felt so under pressure, probably the most pressure I have felt in my life."

Meanwhile, reigning Masters and Welsh Open champion Mark Selby said he had doubts players would risk rigging a match and ruin their careers.

"I find it hard to believe that there is anything in this reported betting scandal involving Jamie Burnett and Stephen Maguire," he wrote on his Eurosport website.

"I just don't think it is in a snooker player's nature. You look at somebody like Stephen Maguire and there is just no reason for him to be involved in anything like that. There is far too much to lose.

"Thankfully nothing like this has ever occurred in any of my matches and I can honestly say that nobody has ever approached me looking to fix a match in any way."

The UK Championship was won by Shaun Murphy. He beat Marco Fu 10-9 in a thrilling final that dragged into the early hours of Monday morning.
