Would you like to be able to change your name, at least once in your life?

Labour MP Owen Bonnici yesterday in Parliament asked the minister responsible for registrations, Austin Gatt, whether the government would consider giving everyone the right to change his first name at least once in his life. He also asked about the number of court applications for change of name.

The minister said the birth certificate could not be changed arbitrarily, but only after an application was made in court and accepted in terms of the Civil Code. There was no limit as to how many times one made an application.

Between January and September this year a total of 15 applications were accepted, 12 were rejected and 19 are still pending.

Last year, 24 requests were accepted and 12 were rejected.
